Get Involved

Get involved with Greenheart and the Fair Trade Movement!

  • Volunteer at Greenheart Shop: Thank you for your interest in volunteer opportunities with the Greenheart Shop! As a non-profit organization, we are excited about the possibility of building a volunteer community to help us advance the Fair Trade movement in Chicago. There are on-going opportunities to help, with everything from talking with our customers about fair trade, to getting our new inventory out on the sales floor. And from time to time we work on exciting fair trade events and projects that always require a few extra hands.
  • If you would like to learn more about the fair trade and environmental movement, share your knowledge with others, or contribute to your local and global community in a meaningful way, the Greenheart volunteer program may be for you. We are currently looking for individuals who can give us at least two four-hour shifts per month for six months, or groups that can help during the month of December. For more information and the date of the next volunteer orientation, email us at info@greenheartshop.org.

  • Advocate for Fair Trade Cocoa: Most chocolate in the U.S. comes from cocoa farms where farmers work in unsafe conditions and receive below poverty wages. In addition, child labor is prevalent in the chocolate industry, forcing children to work and be denied education. By choosing fair trade chocolate, farmers and their families can be ensured a decent living wage and working conditions.

  • Invite the First Lady to Join the "Fair" Party: A grass-roots, nonpartisan coalition of Fair Trade organizations, vendors, retailers, schools, individuals, and consumers, is inviting the First Lady to help extend the Fair Trade movement by declaring the White House a "Fair Trade Home." Having the White House seek to purchase and use Fair Trade goods encourages households throughout the U.S. to refine their buying habits toward ethical consumption so that poverty, both in the U.S. and around the world, is reduced. • Choose fair trade products whenever possible: Your simple everyday choice of buying fair trade products makes a large difference in the lives of low-income artisans and farmers throughout the world.

  • Speak up: If you cannot find Fair Trade products in your local stores, ask the manager to carry fair trade products or leave a note in the suggestion box. If enough customers ask for fair trade products, they will eventually start carrying Fair Trade.
