Mayu

Mayu is a fair trade company that started as a result of Chicago native, Kate Roberson's time spent working in Peru as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Kate decided to start Mayu after falling in love with the artisans and their amazing skills, hoping to continue to support the artisans as her time with the Peace Corps ended. Through Mayu, the Peruvian artisans have been given the opportunity to earn fair wages and become more independent while doing what they enjoy - knitting.

Mayu works directly with women who live in a rural community in the Andes Mountains, selling luxurious, hand-knit accessories made with the highest quality pure alpaca fiber (alpaca is also eco-friendly - both the fiber and the way in which the alpacas are raised are less damaging to the environment than competing materials).

Mayu is committed to its business relationship and friendships with the artisans. The artisans have been taught valuable business skills and are earning fair wages, while still being able to be with their children. Mayu artisans decide the prices for their products and Mayu buys all of the products up-front so the artisans can be paid upon completion of their work.
