MayaWorks is a fair trade nonprofit organization based in Chicago that markets the work of Guatemalan Maya artisans who otherwise have no outlet for their handicrafts. MayaWorks pays the Guatemala artisans at prices they set, provides technical assistance and educational opportunities and meets other Fair Trade criteria.

MayaWorks also believes that community development happens through the economic development of women who otherwise have limited ways to participate or contribute to the economic stability of their families. The women gain self-confidence and hope for themselves because they are able to earn an income from their own skills. They can have hope for their children, family, and village.

MayaWorks supports Mayan women and men who are striving to improve their lives despite obstacles of poverty and illiteracy. MayaWorks groups are organized in many Guatemalan villages because of the considerable strengths of Mayan women, their traditional weaving capabilities, their desire to learn modern business practices, and their determination to benefit their families and communities.

MayaWorks is about interweaving lives in spite of apparent barriers of distance, language, and culture. All people involved with MayaWorks can discover one world through sharing common concerns for health, literacy, dignity, and justice.

MayaWorks artisans are located in Agua Caliente, Buen Esperanza, Comalapa, Patzun, San Pedro La Laguna, Santiago Atitlan, and Xetonox. Nine groups create products for MayaWorks. The artisans participate in MayaWorks funded workshops to improve the quality of their crafts and to learn better business practices.
