Malia Designs is a Chicago-based fair trade company that works with fair trade artisans in Cambodia. It was formed to increase economic opportunity for women in developing countries, and to support local and international non-profit organizations that fight human trafficking in Southeast Asia.
Malia Designs works with non-profit organizations in Cambodia that employ disadvantaged people and small family producers. They are able to expand their access to sustainable income by bringing their crafts to Western markets.
In addition to paying fair wages to the artisans, Malia Designs aims to help victims of human trafficking by donating a portion of its profits to local and international non-profit organizations working in this arena. Human trafficking is a $10 billion illegal trade affecting almost one million people a year. Malia believes that one way to counteract this global issue is to increase access to economic opportunity in the most affected areas.
One organization Malia Designs donates to is Goutte D'eau (Damnok Toek) GENL. Goutte D'eau was established as a NGO in 1997 to assist vulnerable children and their families throughout Cambdoia. In 1999, they implemented a project aimed at rehabilitating children using substances and at reintegrating former trafficking victims in the city of Poipet, bordering Thailand. GENL works to prevent child abuse, substance abuse and child trafficking, rehabilitate under-age substance abusers and traumatized children, integrate neglected children into non-formal (day care, vocational training) and formal education (public school), and reintegrate neglected, trafficked, abused or run away children into their communities.
Donations made by Malia Designs are earmarked specifically for the wants and needs of the children. Know that your purchase of any Malia Designs fair trade bag supports the artisans and the children of GENL!
