Auera is a fair trade company that works with artisans in Jalapao, Brazil who make beautiful jewelry out of sustainably-harvested golden grass.
Mostly women, the artisans of Jalapao have organized themselves around producer-owned associations in order to maintain the region’s cultural legacy, empower themselves, and enhance the living conditions of their families. Most artisans work from their homes, in a sweatshop-free environment, pacing the work to their own rhythm while taking care of their families and housework. Their crafts are currently one of the most important sources of invomce for the local communities of this remote rural region in central Brazil.
Aurea sources directly from artisans and producer-owned associations that decide on their prices and are in control of their production. Aurea’s partnership with the artisans operates in compliance with fair trade principles.
Golden Grass, as it is popularly known, is in fact a flowering plant, Syngonanthus nitens, native of a savanna-like region in central Brazil. The uniqueness of golden grass resides in its innate stunningly golden sheen. This natural shiny plant is a delicate and light weight fiber that can be woven in to shapes and objects.
Golden grass is a pure vegetable material from a renewable source that grows naturally without use of pesticides or other toxic products. After it is harvested, golden grass is left to dry in the shade until it’s ready to be woven into exquisite accessories.
No chemicals, dyes, or coatings are applied to the raw material during the crafting process of our products. The inherently stunning golden grass can be appreciated in its most natural beauty.
